Creating Time: Using Creativity to Reinvent the Clock and Reclaim Your Life is finally making its lil’ way into the world! Over 2,700 people have been participating in The Creating Time Mega Event these past couple of weeks, and the book’s official launch day is this Tuesday, April 17 .

When I did a survey of people about their experiences with time for the book, the results revealed that 90 percent felt “somewhat anxious” to “significantly anxious” about time. What’s even more startling is that these results don’t even seem all that surprising. Stress and worry about time is very much a part of most of our lives. Our modern society makes it acceptable and even expected that we fall into patterns of being worried and stressed about time. While worrying about time seems to be part of our humanity, does it really need to be?

It’s helpful to dig deeply to figure out what is at the root of our problems with time. Why do we overschedule ourselves and allow ourselves to constantly be so busy? Why does it seem so “normal” to worry about time so much? Most importantly, what is the payoff for concerning ourselves so much about time?

Here are some examples of payoffs that people might receive from worrying or complaining about time:
  • Time is a good catchall: if I can complain about being busy, then I don’t have to look at other areas in my life.
  • My schedule is wrapped up with my self-esteem. Being “too busy” means that I’m doing something right.
  • Worrying about time gives me something to talk about with other people.
  • Worrying about time is a convenient excuse for not following my dreams.
Once we can identify the payoffs that we get from worrying about time, we can see them for what they are: illusions that keep us from living our true potential. Simply being aware of what we are getting from our time worries allows us to make a different choice: a choice to partner with time, instead of working against it.

We know that time is relative. Einstein laid it all out for us over a hundred years ago, and you prove it every time you compare an hour you spend in the dentist’s chair to an hour you spend with a loved one! Time is totally different in these two extremely different situations because of several variables at play, such as emotion, engagement, flow, desire, interest, pain, and pleasure. With so many variables dancing around in every single moment of our lives, we know that time is never constant. Since time is relative, we can use this to our advantage, and choose what our relationship with time will be. Every time we decide how we choose to talk about, measure, and experience time, we are creating a new era of time for ourselves and those we touch.

I invite you to change time anxiety to time artistry. Let’s finally drop all the archaic view and limitations of time that have held us back from fully embracing the wild beautiful truth: time is not a defined line; it is instead a vibrant, completely moldable, layered, multi-faceted work of art that is in our hands to create and design, each and every day.

It is helpful to personify the entity of time and realize that we can build trust in time, just as we build trust in people: through an ongoing relationship sustained by exploration, awareness, dialogue, and evidence. To facilitate a deeper trust in time, this ARTsignment invites you to create a Time Guide to help cultivate a relationship with time in a personified form. Your Time Guide is an imaginary persona that you create; a benevolent figure who supports you fully and gives you exactly what you need in the area of time. The more deeply you get to know this new trusty guide, the more you’ll find yourself trusting and working with time.

Step 1: Take some time to answer the following journal questions. I encourage you to write your answers down rather than just thinking about them. The act of writing opens up new portals for discovery and pushes you to be more honest with yourself.

Some of the questions may be more applicable to you than others, but I invite you to consider all the questions, even if you think they may not be relevant at first. Feel free to not only write your answers to the questions but write about the feelings you are experiencing, as well.

1. What do you find yourself saying or thinking over and over, about time? (If you’re not sure, ask a friend or loved one if there is a recurring theme in what you say about time.)

2. How might your life be different if you did not complain or worry about time?

3. Imagine that you could snap your fingers and all your time anxieties would be gone. Who are you now? What is your first thought and feeling about this prospect?

4. What have you discovered about the roles that worry and anxiety about time play in your life?

Step 2: Close your eyes and allow yourself to relax. Imagine that you could have a Time Guide who would suddenly come to life before you and remain at your side whenever you needed her. What do you need most from this Guide? What kind of guidance, support, advice, or encouragement do you most need, regarding the subject of time?

Step 3: Begin creating a physical form for your Time Guide, using any media or materials you like. As you work, think about your strongest, most powerful wishes and dreams, and allow that positive energy to become infused in every part of the Time Guide’s being. Bring more and more life to your Time Guide as you flesh out the details of her personality. Does she have a name? Has she always been a Time Guide? What was she doing before she appeared in your life?

Step 4: As you work, allow your Time Guide to “speak” to you. What does she want you to know about time? What words of wisdom does she whisper? Let your Time Guide know you are listening and see what messages are being shared!

For today's "In the Studio" Interview, I'm delighted to present Merrill Disney, an ARTbundance Coach who is also a comedy concept writer and is currently writing, directing and producing “Will that Fit in my Mouth” an animated short about emotional eating. Merrill truly embraces each moment and is a wonderful example of someone who fills her personal and professional time with great meaning.

Artella: What led you to become a Certified ARTbundance Coach?

Merrill: I was initially mesmerized with the ArtellaLand website; hence, it transported me on a yacht with my own imagination. I knew Marney had a special message to offer. Originally, I wanted to swim around with some new ways of relating to my comedy clients but ended up with an added bonus of flavorful tools to help with my volunteer work with teens that suffer from eating disorders. Seems I am always looking for revolutionary ideas to relate to the world and art always opens the channels.

Artella: How has your ARTbundance training influenced your work?

Merrill: I have a larger repertoire with communicating with clients and helping them move through blocks so the material can flow. With my work with teens with eating disorders, ARTbundance helps them to check in with how they are feeling--going inward instead of controlling their outer environment.

You can read the rest of Merrill's interview, here

The ARTbundance Certification Training (ACT) is now in session. The next session will be scheduled later this year. You can learn more about ACT and request an application when the next session is announced, here

For today’s Quotz crystal, I selected a quote from Creating Time that seemed to resonate when I shared it during The Creating Time Mega Event class #2 this week.  It is, simply:
