When Kai was a baby, he liked to watch a clip from the movie, “Chariots of Fire”, with the team running on the beach at the end of the movie. He couldn’t even talk yet, but he would consistently make the sign for “dog” with his hands when the clip began. At first, Tony and I didn’t know why, but finally realized that there was, indeed, a dog in the background at the end of the clip. We were delighted by his observation and affinity for the scene, and enjoyed our own re-enactments of the scene as Kai learned to walk on Hawaii’s wonderful beaches. (Cue “Chariots of Fire” musical theme here…)

So it was a stroke of genius that my husband recently thought to record bits of the film once again, for the two of them to enjoy watching as a special treat during their “boys’ weekends” while I’ve been traveling on the Creating Time tour. Kai, now age four, has told me all about the movie (“a chariot is really a cart, and it’s not really on fire…it’s just a symbol”) and seems to have especially connected with the story of Eric Liddell, who runs from faith in his heart. Many of you know that Kai has a metabolic disorder that affects his bone structure and growth, and with his physical differences, he probably will not grow up to be an athlete in the traditional sense. When Kai thoughtfully explained to me that when he can’t run fast with his legs, he can run with his heart, it broke my own heart but I loved that he is already learning that his heart can do whatever his body may not be able to do.

What about you? Is there something that you think you can’t do? What happens if you let your heart step in…

“I don’t have training to paint realistic landscapes…but I can paint from my heart.”

“I don’t have the money to invest in a fancy website…but I can write from my heart on a free blog.”

“I don’t have the time and energy to decorate my space…but I can add a little heart to just one corner for now.”

Love, passion, and heart are great antidotes to “can’t”. For example, in Creating Time I addressed the catchall excuse of “not having time”. We usually have much more time than we think however, when we can sidestep our general attitude of lack and exasperation. The key is that we have to create time, and one great way is through our choices. We have even more when we let inner passion, rather than outer expectations, dictate our choices.

When we let a little heart in, we can ride in our own chariot of fire, fueled by our deep desires, with the sands of time between our toes and the oceans of hope constantly creating new worlds at our side.

On a personal note, now with the bulk of the current book tour finally coming to a close, I want to thank the entire community for the heart that you all contributed to the Creating Time book launch. From participating in The Creating Time Mega Event, to chiming in with comments on Facebook, to coming out to meet me in person, spreading the words amongst your friends, and helping Creating Time reach #1 in multiple Amazon categories when it launched in the US and Canada…it’s clear that this book launch was deeply supported by the love of the Artella Land community and my heart is immensely grateful.

Writing about cocktail umbrellas in the description of the ARTsignment™ Island Adventure class reminded me of one of my favorite projects featured in the Artella eBook, "Paper Doll ABCs", which presents a different paper doll technique for each letter of the alphabet. The technique for the letter "U" is "umbrellas", and features little cocktail umbrellas as three-dimensional skirts for paper dolls.

You can "dress" paper dolls in these funky flare skirts, and they become great table decorations or even be fun inclusions in an altered book or journal. They also can be handy tools for inspiration and productivity. For example, collage images on the umbrella that symbolize the things that shelter you from the stormy days. Or try writing your goals on the open umbrellas, as a fun way to keep your goals and intentions on display.

To create these little umbrella-skirts:
  1. Cut out the paper doll's upper body, including arms. Cut the paper doll off at the waist, where the skirt would go.
  2. Take the cocktail umbrella and make a small slit in its top, using and X-Acto knife. Some umbrellas have a Styrofoam top, and others have a wooden top, but the X-Action knife will work to make a slit in either
  3. Slide the bottom of the doll's bodice through the slit.
  4. If the bottom of the umbrella is pointed, cut it so that it has a blunt end.
  5. Insert the umbrella into a hole of a bottom to stand the doll up.

This project is excerpted from Paper Doll ABCs: Paper Doll Ideas, Inventions, and Techniques for Artists.

Open Up Your Umbrella-Vision:
Finally Uncovering the Connections in Your Talents

One of the most significant events of my life occurred ten years ago, when I stumbled upon my destiny, as I figured out a way to combine all of my interests and talents under one "umbrella". Since then, one of my true passions has been helping other people do the same.

If the list of your interests, skills, and talents seems like a mile long, and it looks all-too-impossible to combine them into any one endeavor for work or play, this recording will open new doors...and, well, umbrellas! :-)

In the class recording, I present several fun, gentle, and extremely illuminating processes to finally make those connections. You'll come away with a greater sense of your "umbrella", and a newly-invigorated connection to your true gifts! Sue Ann Hillyer
Sue Ann Hillyer
For today’s In The Studio interview, I’m delighted to present Sue Ann Hillyer, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in person when I was visiting San Francisco on the Creating Time book tour in April. One of the highlights of the weekend was watching Sue Ann dance with Kai and our young friend, Hope, in the aisles of The New Living Expo! :-)

Sue Ann truly does share from her heart, so I knew she would be the perfect ARTbundance™ Coach to feature in tandem with the theme of the article in this Artellagram.

I know you will enjoy getting to know Sue Ann!

Artella: What led you to become a Certified ARTbundance™ Coach?

Sue Ann: I have been studying creativity for most of my life and have taken other trainings and workshops. One day I got an email from someone who sent me a link to Marney’s website and a free call Marney was doing. She thought that I would enjoy her story and what she was doing in the world, and thought her work matched up with mine. I listened to the call and I was hooked and I signed up for the first training!

Artella: How has your ARTbundance™ training influenced your work?

Sue Ann: For one thing, it keeps my awareness up around my own creativity. . I have always believed that art is the way to self discovery; in fact the tag line for my business is “Explore, Discover, Create!” ACT has given me tools to work in my own life, as well as others. I often refer back to the training manual and find myself suggesting an ARTsignment™ to someone who may be struggling with something. When working with a client I find that the ARTsignments™ help deepen their experience and allow for those “Ah-ha” moments.

You can read the rest of Sue Ann's interview, here

Applications for the Summer 2012 session of ACT are being accepted through June 29. You can learn more about ACT and request an application here.

For today’s Quotz crystal, I selected another one of the beautiful ~TimeFlash~ Cards. These cards, designed by one of Artella’s designers, Annette Phillips, feature our favorite takeaway quote from The Creating Time Mega Event. You can get the whole set of ~TimeFlash~ Cards here.
