Creativity Tip:
3 Ways to Make Creative Clocks

Artellagram 9-22-12

I think my very favorite part of writing Creating Time was receiving all the wonderful art projects and submissions from contributors all over the world. The book is full with colorful, creative clocks and time-themed artwork by 80 fabulous creators. When people tell me, "I have a copy of your book but I haven't had time to read it yet," LOL, my first response is to encourage them to just skim through the pages and look at the artwork. The artwork by the contributors is so fun and interesting, that alone will start to shift your perspective about time!

Here are three very different approaches to creating your own creative clocks:

1. Make an actual, working clock. Art and hobby stores sell "clock kits", which allow you to turn just about anything into a working clock. My mother, Arthiss Kliever, even turned a copy of Creating Time into working clock and gave it to me for my birthday! I've made working clocks out of paper cups, picture frames, and even a paper of ruby slipper shoes! What could you turn into a real, working clock?

2. Create an actual, playing clock. Most of the clocks by contributors in Creating Time don’t "work", per se, but boy, do they ever play! :-) You can use any media you like to design your dream clock. Sketch it on a napkin, collage it on a poster board, paint it on a piece of furniture. This is a really fun way to interact with time in new ways.

3. Create a click in your imagination only. I believe we can "reset our clock" by simply imagining new kinds of clocks. Here's an inquiry I posted in the Facebook Creating Time community a few weeks ago, which happens to fit in perfectly with next week's free telelcass: What toy or plaything would you like to represent your sense of time?

Some of the answers posted on Facebook included a slinky, a colorful spinning top…maybe even the kind with candy inside, a Jack in the Box, crayons, a spin art kit, and a wooden dog on wheels floppy ears and yellow pull string! What great images these are for telling time!

Have fun creating your own creative clocks!
